Informal Settlements

My dad and I wake up at 5:00am every morning to beg for money on the side of
the road until I have to go to school. My home is made from corrugated iron and scraps from burnt down houses. My life is very tough. The toilets have no privacy at all and there is a pit toilet so it’s very dangerous for us kids because we could fall in it.Our town shares 3 of them.

Every time it rains my dad has to stay up to make sure the house doesn’t flood. The school that I go to has 40 children in a class and 20 text books for us to share. With only a few desks most of us have to sit on the floor. It takes me 30 minutes to walk to school from home every morning. I get really tired each morning going to school. There is always waste lying around and me and my friends run through it. I work hard each morning helping my dad clear the mud and it rains so hard in the night that it sometimes takes me 1 hour to walk to school. I eat bread carrot soup and chicken feet for supper every night. The food at school isn’t nice and we don’t get much of it , it’s normally beetroot soup.

Our shack has floated away a couple of times cause it’s always flooding here. I always get cut by the litter here because it’s just lying everywhere. It would be nice if I could have a cement house with tile flooring and less litter lying around.
